Sexual Power

Sex and the City Season 1, Episode 5: The Power of Female Sex

Growing up Catholic in an immigrant Chinese household, sex/sexuality was always a hush-hush, taboo non topic. I never got the birds and the bees talk. I think I learned about the logistics of intercourse from my older cousin and the rest from my religion teacher sophomore year in high school. I was never schooled in the ways of sex or aware of my sexuality (or lack thereof), nor did I ever need to practice it (I went to an all-girls Catholic school), so I admire a woman who knows how to wield her sexual power.

I see no shame in it. It's simply another skill, like public speaking. Some women empower it like Samantha, some think it is wrong like Miranda, some think it is morally questionable like Carrie, and some feel uncomfortable using it like Charlotte.

In this episode, Charlotte wants to represent famous artist Neville Morgan at her gallery. She is in return asked by Neville to pose nude for him so that he could paint her vagina, the subject of his latest work. Neville explains to Charlotte that "the cunt is the most powerful force in the universe, the source of all life, pleasure, and beauty." After a few moments of classic Charlotte squeamishness, the episode ends with the girls at the gallery's opening reception for Neville Morgan's exhibition. My thoughts are if you got it, use it, work it, and own it.
